The Muskoka Pride Committee is looking for VOLUNTEERS to help in running events and social activities - especially during Muskoka Pride Week (July 20 - 28).
For our monthly coffee events, and other social activities - we are looking for individuals who can act as hosts to the event. During Muskoka Pride Week, we are looking for people who can help with planning, setup, and takedown (depending on the event). We are also looking for individuals interested in sitting on the BOARD OF DIRECTORS, which involves attending the monthly meetings and helping out and attending events. If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] Our next Board meeting is Tuesday, April 30th - https://www.facebook.com/events/486942588026105/ Congratulations to the Trillium Lakelands District School Board on holding its second annual LGBTQ conference. The conference was well-attended, by Board staff and over 85 high school students involved in the Gay-Straight Alliances at the 7 high schools.
Guest speakers included: artist Spencer Harrison, musician Kate Reid, drag bingo with Miss DivaLicious and Ms. Madge Enthat. Several TLDSB trustees were in attendance, as was Director of Education Larry Hope. Superintendent Shelly Woon, in her opening remarks, looks forward to the day when an LGBTQ conference is no longer necessary and when all students feel safe to be who they are. In the meantime, the TLDSB is working hard to create a more inclusive and safe learning environment. A special video was shown, in which comedian Rick Mercer welcomed the students to the conference, and reminded them that "it gets better." http://www.moosefm.com/cfbg/news/12530-tldsb-holds-lgbtq-conference The Huntsville Picnic committee is looking for members. Like so many musicians before her, Reid really is "Doing it for the Chicks." What else but quadruple-entendre humour, cherry flavored cigars and a hilarious album cover that paints her as a misogynistic femme rapper can one expect from one of the queerest straight-shooters in contemporary music these days. "I’m merely on a divine plan to convert you to the dark side of the bedroom," she sings on the title track of her eagerly anticipated third album. "The music's all just extra-curricular, I’m just doing it for the chicks."
Given the all-persuasions crowds drawn to her shows, Reid is doing it for the ladies and everyone else with a yen for her fiery performances and rare ability to glide from laughaloud sing-alongs to intense tales about the price some pay in staying true to their own trailblazing sexual identities. Critics have been cheering her on as much as her diehard fans and the new album follows the wave of acclaim that greeted 2009's "I’m Just Warming Up". Indeed, Reid was voted Favourite New Discovery of 2009 by Penguin Eggs Magazine (Canada's Folk, Roots and World magazine) critics, received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Best New/Emerging Artist of the Year (2009), a Toronto Independent Music Award nomination for Best Acoustic Album (2010). In the interim she has toured like a flame-haired banshee while nurturing a grassroots audience that now stretches east across Canada and south into the U.S. Praise for Kate Reid: Pride, poignancy, power abound amongst carefully crafted gem after gem that don't mince words but never preach. Kate Reid is uplifting, life-affirming and she's a magnificent singer and writer of beautiful songs. - Sean McGhee, Rock 'N' Reel, UK, Dec. 2011 (Kate Reid) is back to her winning ways right from the opening track of her latest release "Doing it for the Chicks", telling the tale of a cross-dressing tugboat skipper chasing down love in one of Nanaimo’s rougher drinking holes in "Captain Cupcake and the Cambie Hotel"...nothing but the finest in contemporary Canadian folk music. - Stuart Derdeyn, Vancouver Province, Sept. 2011 Kate Reid is, quite simply, one of the best songwriters to emerge from the Canadian folk roots scene since David Francey. - Tim Readman, Penguin Eggs Magazine, January 2010 |
